THANK GOD FOR ICE CREAM

One technique I learned early in recovery to reduce my craving for alcohol was to eat sweets. I don’t know why it works or if it works for everyone, but it sure worked for this drunk. A piece of candy seemed to ease my craving to drink. I eventually settled on ice cream. I always loved ice cream as a child but didn’t touch it for years, simply because ice cream took up too much room in my stomach and didn’t go well with whiskey or beer. A bowl of ice cream every evening satisfied my craving for the drink. During the day a candy bar would also help. It became as routine as my nightly Jack Daniels on the rocks in front of the TV. Every evening about 8pm I would meticulously prepare a heaping bowl of ice cream with a splash of milk on top. I would mix it into a gooey milk shake like concoction and slowly eat the sloppy potion with a spoon. I would sip it off the spoon like a Jack Daniels on the rocks. For some reason, any craving I had would be satisfied. Oh, I also put on a few extra pounds. For a good while I believed I was becoming addicted to ice cream. Actually, Reese’s Peanut Butter Ice Cream was my new drug of choice. I loved it just like my Jack Daniels. After a while, my need for ice cream faded from a daily replacement for alcohol to an occasional treat. Thank God for Ice Cream
